Shaffer Chimere Smith (born October 18, 1979), better known by his stage name Ne-Yo, is an American pop and R&B singer–songwriter, record producer, actor, and occasional rapper. Since his debut, Ne-Yo has had five top ten songs on the Billboard Hot 100 as a lead artist and two number-one albums on the Billboard 200. Ne-Yo has also amassed a catalog of chart-topping songs that he has written for other artists.

Ne-Yo broke into the recording industry as a songwriter, penning the hit "Let Me Love You" for singer Mario. The single's successful release in the United States prompted an informal meeting between Ne-Yo and Def Jam's label head, and signing a recording contract.

In 2006, he released his debut album, In My Own Words, which contained the US number one hit "So Sick". Then in 2007, he released his sophomore album, Because of You which contained the US top 3 hit, "Because of You". In 2008, he released his third album, Year of the Gentleman, which contained the top 10 hits "Closer" and "Miss Independent".

Early life

Ne-Yo was born in Camden, Arkansas, and baptized as Shaffer Chimere Smith.[1] His father is African American and his mother is of mixed African American and Chinese American descent;[2] both were musicians.

As a young child, he was raised by his mother alone after she separated from his father.[3] In hopes of better opportunity, his mother relocated the family to Las Vegas, Nevada.

Career
2000-2005: Career beginnings

Ne-Yo emerged into the recording industry as member of the Las Vegas-based quartet Envy.[4] After the group disbanded in 2000, Ne-Yo was signed to Columbia Records, but, after recording his first album, was dropped from the label before he could even release it.[5] American singer Marques Houston happened to hear one of Ne-Yo's tracks, "That Girl", which was supposed to be the latter's debut single off his then-unreleased album. Houston rerecorded "That Girl" and released it as a single to his 2003 album MH.[4] The release of the song led to Ne-Yo being recognized as a top songwriter.[4]

For the next two years, Ne-Yo continued writing songs, some of which have not been officially released.[4] He contributed songs to American singer Teedra Moses's 2004 album Complex Simplicity, Christina Milian's It's About Time, and the American boy band Youngstown,[6] though all of which failed to give Ne-Yo much attention from the mainstream.[4] Ne-Yo has also contributed songs to American singer Mary J. Blige, B2K, Faith Evans and Musiq, among others.[7]

Ne-Yo broke into the industry after "Let Me Love You", a song he wrote for American singer Mario, reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and later stayed on the top spot for nine weeks.[6][8] After the successful release, Tina Davis, former A&R representative for Def Jam Recordings, arranged an informal meeting with label head L.A. Reid.[4] Originally, Ne-Yo was not seeking a new contract, but, after he had performed to them, he was signed by American hip hop artist Jay-Z, then-CEO of Def Jam.[5][7]

"Ne-Yo" was coined by a producer Ne-Yo once worked with, Big D Evans,[9] because Evans claimed that Ne-Yo sees music as Neo sees the matrix.[10] As a joke, Evans started calling him Ne-Yo until everybody was accustomed to it.[3]

2006-2007: In My Own Words and Because of You

Ne-Yo promoting Because of You

In early 2006, Ne-Yo released his debut album, In My Own Words, through Def Jam. Boosted by its popular second single, "So Sick", the album debuted at number one on Billboard 200, selling over 301,000 copies in the first week.[11] During the same week, the single had reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100.[8] Later singles released were "When You're Mad" and "Sexy Love", which peaked at number 15 and number 7, respectively.[12] The album has been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for a shipment of over one million units.[13]

His sophomore album, Because of You, was released on May 1, 2007, and, fueled by its lead single, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling 251,000 copies in the United States; the feat gave Ne-Yo his second number-one album.[14] The first single from the platinum-selling album was the title track, which peaked at the number-two spot.[12] Despite the success of "Because of You", later singles released charted lower and were unable to reach the Top 20.[12] The album has been certified platinum by RIAA for a shipment of over one million units.[13] In December 2007, Ne-Yo and the Goo Goo Dolls performed at a fund-raising concert for the then presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama.[15]

2008-2009: Year of the Gentleman and Greatest Hits

Ne-Yo's third album, Year of the Gentleman, was first released on September 11, 2008, in Japan. The album sold 250,000 copies in its first week in the United States, debuting on the Billboard 200 at number two.[16] Reviews for the album were positive: in one of which, Caryn Ganz of Rolling Stone magazine wrote that Year of the Gentleman is "actually a superb concept album about what a great boyfriend he [Ne-Yo] can be".[17]

The first two singles, "Closer" and "Miss Independent", have peaked at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100. The album was nominated for Best Contemporary R&B Album and Album of the Year at the 2009 Grammy Awards, "Closer" for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, and "Miss Independent" for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song.[18] Year of the Gentleman has been certified platinum by RIAA for a shipment of more than one million copies.[13] The third single, "Mad", peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100.

In September 2 2009, Ne-Yo released greatst hits album Ne-Yo: The Collection in Japan.[19] The album was also released with a limited edition CD+DVD edition complete with the music videos of singles.[20] It debuted at number four on Japan Oricon weekly albums chart, selling 55,625 copies in the first week.[21]

The New Boyz are the 17 year old rappers that lead the jerk movement. They made the hit song “You’re a Jerk.” New Boyz started 2009 as a Los Angeles underground youth phenomenon, but in only a matter of months, they’ve become rising stars on a national level. In this short time period, 17-year-olds Ben J and Legacy have gone from shows in local high school gyms to performing on the red carpet at the BET Awards and booking an impressive lineup of concerts across the country.

This astounding jump comes from the success of their song “You’re a Jerk,” a hypnotic dancefloor-filler that the New York Times called “pretty much perfect.” Though it started as a favorite on MySpace, it has turned into a certified hit. It not only became the most requested track on influential L.A. radio station Power 106, but it’s taken over playlists around the country. During its first week for sale on iTunes, “You’re a Jerk” sold over 53 thousand copies.

The duo of Ben J (born Earl Benjamin) and Legacy (Dominic Thomas) met as freshmen at Hesperia High School in San Bernardino County. Both were part of the same extra large rap group, but then each left to become solo artists. With their October birthdays only a day apart, they pooled their gift money to buy rudimentary recording equipment. After Legacy transferred to a new school, they decided to combine forces as New Boyz, creating a sound, slang and fashion sense that’s made them the biggest hip-hop group to emerge from L.A. in years.

While “You’re a Jerk” has helped bring New Boyz global recognition, the song has also shown a spotlight on Los Angeles’ growing, and teen-driven, jerk music movement. Jerk music is a stripped down party sound, largely created on home computers for kids with crazy haircuts, and has been building in popularity around the city for years. The neon bright video for “You’re a Jerk” features appearances from many of the rubber-limbed dance crews associated with the scene. In fact, it was these dancers that helped popularize the song in the first place, taking it from MySpace to YouTube and eventually gaining the attention of radio DJs. “We just did ‘You’re a Jerk’ as another song, the fans are the ones that did all the promoting,” says Ben J. “They started making jerk video after jerk video after jerk video to it.”

Though “You’re a Jerk” is the first single from Skinny Jeanz And A Mic, their forthcoming album on Asylum/Warner Brothers, New Boyz is bigger than just one sound. “People think we only do jerk music, but we do a whole lot of everything,” says Legacy. “The album’s about the typical teenage life.” For instance, “Colorz” finds them repping the colorful clothing worn by today’s youth, while “Tie Me Down” takes on girls who are overeager to lock them down in relationships.

Though Skinny Jeanz & A Mic features the sonic imprint of modern movements like hyphy and Atlanta’s own teen rap madness, it’s also heavily influenced by the minimal bass and drum machine sound from hip-hop’s earliest days. While Legacy handled the distinctive production on half of the album, including “You’re a Jerk,” initially this move was done out of necessity. “I knew if we didn’t make our own beats, we’d have to pay people, and we didn’t have any money at the time,” says Legacy. “I had to teach myself to make beats. I’d watch YouTube for tutorials.”

For the rest of the album, New Boyz are going into the studio with Diplo, the internationally respected DJ and producer responsible for MIA’s “Paper Planes,” but are also working with other young L.A. producers including JHawk, Jukebox, Talent and Jay-Nari. The results only enhance Skinny Jeanz And A Mic’s celebration of teenage talent. “They’re kids like us,” says Legacy.

Todays Celebrity of the day is the Beautiful Kelly Rowland who stars in 50 cent baby by me video. Kelendria "Kelly" Rowland (born February 11, 1981) is an American singer, songwriter, dancer, actress, model and television host. Born in Atlanta, Georgia and raised in Houston, Texas, Rowland rose to fame in the late 1990s as one of the founding members of the girl group Destiny's Child. She has sold more than 50 million records worldwide with the group.[1][2]

During the hiatus of the group, Rowland collaborated with rapper Nelly on the single "Dilemma," a worldwide number-one hit, and released her rock pop-influenced debut solo album Simply Deep in 2002. It became a commercial success, selling more than two million copies worldwide, and garnered three more or less successful singles, among "Stole" and "Can't Nobody."[3] Following the formal disbandment of Destiny's Child in 2005, Rowland's often-delayed second album, Ms. Kelly, was released in 2007. Moderately successful on the charts, it spawned the hit singles "Like This" and "Work."[4] In 2009, she scored another number-one hit with her contribution on French DJ David Guetta's single "When Love Takes Over."[5]

In 2002, Rowland branched into acting, which led to guest stints on sitcom series such as The Hughleys and Girlfriends, and leading roles in big-screen movies like Freddy vs. Jason (2003) and The Seat Filler (2004). In 2009, she became the host of the Bravo competition series The Fashion Show alongside Isaac Mizrahi. You can read more about kelly here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kelly_Rowland

Overton has a different father but the same mother as 2 of his brothers making him unrelated to Cheyenne Harrell and Jacob Harrell. Their father was a disciplinarian. He taught them how to sing, while the boys' uncle Donny (Drano) Harrell furthered their music careers. The boys, however, had different mothers. Papa and Jacob's mother is named Valerie. The mother of Jared, Anthony, and Grady Jr. is Nancy Lynn. Papa and Jacob were not raised by their father, as he had been convicted of fraud and was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison. The boys were raised on the music of their inspirations, which ranged from Michael Bolton to Stevie Wonder

Brutha Growing up

The Harrell brothers came to the entertainment world at a young age out of a four-generations musical family. At 5 and 6 years old, Anthony Harrell and Grady Harrell III hooked up with their first cousin Canela Cox and formed the group Papa’s Results, being trained and taught by Grady Harrell II, who was then signed to MCA Records prior to a prison term. The children appeared in his 1989 R&B hit single “Sticks and Stone”[5] and did many local shows throughout California. The group lasted until Canela moved to Holland to follow her mother's musical career[6]. They filled her spot with family friend Jeff Lee and changed their name to Serenade.[7] The trio quickly gained notice. They appeared on episodes from Saved by the Bell: The New Class in 1997 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkYZihr4cMg where Anthony (20 at the time) played the regular role of Eric Little http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0364078 and Moesha and signed a record deal with Dr Dre's Afterbirth Records. The record deal went nowhere, and, in 1998, the group shortened its name to Nade and signed with Elektra Records.[8] Clashing with record executives over image concerns due to the ages of Grady and Anthony, the Nade parted ways with Elektra, and Nade split up. As a duet comprising the 2 Harrell brothers Grady and Anthony, they put down 2 independent albums, in 1999 and 2001. In 2002 they were joined by their brothers JR, Jake, and Papa and formed Brutha.[6] The group was discovered by Michael Bolton, who introduced them on the 2003 Soul Train Holiday Special. Along with their success, there has also been controversy ranging from major family clashes to questions about their age. As of 2009, the true ages of Brutha): Anthony 33, Grady 35, Jared 24, Pappa 22, Jacob 20.

Making success

In 2008, their uncle Donny "Drano" Harrell, CEO of Goodfellas Entertainment, and the late Shakir Stewart(died in 2008 of an apparent suicide), senior vice president of A&R at Island Def Jam, invited the group to Atlanta to do a filmed audition in front of Jermaine Dupri and a range of producers.[9] It resulted in a one-hour original special TV show called "Jermaine Dupri presents : Brutha", broadcast March 24 on Peachtree TV.The group caught the attention of Jermaine Dupri who signed them to the Island Def Jam Music Group.[10] An alleged Presidential-elect Barack Obama aide had asked them to perform at the inauguration on January 20, 2009, after liking their acapellas on Youtube. There is no verification as to the legitamacy of this call and is determinded to be a hoax since Brutha did not appear or perform at the January 20th inauguration.

Aubrey Drake Graham (born October 24, 1986)[1] is a Canadian actor and recording artist. He originally became known for playing character Jimmy Brooks on the TV series Degrassi: The Next Generation. As a rapper, he performs under the mononym Drake.[2] Drake continued to recognize a close affiliation with Lil Wayne's Young Money Entertainment,[3] before officially signing with the record label in June 2009.[4] His first studio album, Thank Me Later, is expected to be released on the label in 2010.
Aubrey Drake Graham was born in Toronto, Ontario, the son of Dennis Graham, a drummer who worked with Jerry Lee Lewis; he is the nephew of musicians Larry Graham and Teenie Hodges.[5][6] Graham's father is an African American from Memphis, Tennessee, while Graham's mother, an educator, is a white Jewish Canadian.[7][8][9][10] His parents divorced when he was five, and he was raised by his mother in Toronto's wealthy Forest Hill neighbourhood,[11] attending elementary school at Forest Hill Public School, and high school at Forest Hill Collegiate Institute, where he began acting,[8] but did not graduate.[12] He also spent many summers with his father in Memphis, Tennessee
Acting career

In 2001, Graham began his acting career, playing the role of Jimmy Brooks, a character on Degrassi: The Next Generation. In the show, Brooks is a basketball star who became physically disabled after he was shot by a classmate. His role on the show ended in 2009, when producers cut the entire Degrassi staff for a new group of actors.[12]

Music career

In February 2006, Drake released his first mixtape Room for Improvement. It was made available via his website and official MySpace page. From the success of his first mixtape, he later began releasing more, capitalizing from the buzz.

In 2007, he released Comeback Season to much critical acclaim and praise. Which produced a single and a music video for Replacement Girl featuring Trey Songz. It also contained a freestyle over a song with Lil Wayne, a remix of the already popular song "Man of the Year" originally by Brisco and Flo-Rida. Also in 2007, Drake became the first unsigned Canadian rapper to have his music video featured on BET when his first single, "Replacement Girl" was featured as the "New Joint of the Day" on April 30, 2007.[13]

In 2008, Lil Wayne was given some of Drake's music from Rap-A-Lot founder, J. Prince's son and he called Drake immediately to fly to Houston to come and tour with him. Drake and Wayne had recorded a couple of songs during the time including, 'Ransom', The original version of 'I Want This Forever' and the remix to Drake's song, 'Brand New'. Although after becoming apart of Lil Wayne's crew, Young Money, Drake was still not signed.

On February 13, 2009, Drake released his third official mixtape, So Far Gone, for free download on his blog site which included Drake's mentor Lil Wayne, Bun B, Omarion, Lloyd and his friend, Trey Songz. It received over 2,000 downloads in the first 2 hours of release. It was extremely successful in the underground and eventually made it's way to radio. Due to the success of the mixtape's two singles, "Best I Ever Had" and "Successful", it was released as an EP featuring only five songs from the mix tape and one new song. MTV named it, "The Hottest Mixtape of 2009 (So Far)'.[14]

Since So Far Gone, Drake worked with Jay-Z, Kanye West, Young Jeezy, Mary J. Blige, and Jamie Foxx. Drake has also written for Jazz Cartier, Bishop Brigante, and Dr. Dre.

He achieved success before signing to a major record label, according to his management Hip Hop Since 1978.[15] In June 2009, it was revealed that an unauthorized album entitled The Girls Love Drake and credited to Drake was up for sale on iTunes. A lawsuit is planned against the label.[16]

On the Billboard Hot 100 chart of July 4, 2009, both "Best I Ever Had", and "Every Girl" by Young Money Entertainment entered the top ten at positions 3 and 10 respectively. Drake is only the second artist to have his first two top ten hits in the same week. The first was fellow Canadian Nelly Furtado who entered the top ten in 2001 with "I'm Like A Bird" the same week as Missy Elliott's "Get Ur Freak On", a remix of which included a credited contribution from Furtado.

On June 29, 2009 it was confirmed Drake signed a record deal with Young Money Entertainment.[17] This followed what Billboard purported to be "one of the biggest bidding wars ever".[18] He plans to release his official debut album, Thank Me Later, in late 2009, and has confirmed collaborations with the likes of Kanye West, Jay-Z, Danny![19] and Lil Wayne.[4] Drake is currently touring with Wayne and other rap artists on the America's Most Wanted Tour.

On July 31, 2009, Drake fell on stage and injured his knee while performing "Best I Ever Had", with Lil Wayne in Camden, New Jersey.[20] He is able to walk, and had surgery on September 8, 2009
